Section 2:Practice Sets

Practice Set 1:The Future of Work

The COVID-19 pandemic forced millions of people around the world to work from home, and the experience changed attitudes toward work in lasting ways. Before 2020, remote work was relatively rare, with most companies insisting that employees come to the office every day. However, once workers and employers experienced the benefits — reduced commuting time, greater flexibility, and often higher productivity — many were reluctant to return to the old model.

A 2023 survey by Stanford University found that 65 percent of workers preferred a hybrid arrangement, combining two or three days in the office with the rest at home. Many companies, including major technology firms like Microsoft and Google, have adopted this approach. They argue that hybrid work allows them to attract talent from a wider geographic area and improves employee satisfaction.

Not everyone is enthusiastic, however. Managers sometimes struggle to coordinate teams that are rarely in the same place at the same time. Younger employees may miss out on the mentorship and networking opportunities that come from working alongside experienced colleagues in person. There are also concerns about the impact on city centers, where restaurants, shops, and public transit systems depend on the daily influx of office workers.

Despite these challenges, the shift toward flexible work appears to be permanent. Experts predict that by 2030, the traditional five-day office week will be the exception rather than the rule. Companies that fail to adapt may find themselves at a disadvantage in competing for the best talent.

選擇題

  1. According to the passage, before 2020, most companies ___. (A) allowed employees to work from home regularly (B) required employees to come to the office daily (C) had already adopted hybrid work models (D) were planning to eliminate office spaces

  2. What concern about remote work is mentioned in the passage? (A) Employees earn less money when working from home. (B) Technology companies oppose remote work. (C) Younger workers may miss mentorship opportunities. (D) Remote work increases commuting time.

  3. What does the passage suggest about the future of work? (A) All companies will require employees to return to offices. (B) Flexible work arrangements are likely to continue. (C) Remote work will disappear after the pandemic. (D) Government regulations will force people back to offices.

  1. Why are some people concerned about the impact of remote work on city centers?

Practice Set 2:The Mystery of Bird Migration

Every year, billions of birds undertake extraordinary journeys across continents, oceans, and mountain ranges. The Arctic tern, for example, travels from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back each year — a round trip of roughly 70,000 kilometers, making it the longest migration of any animal on Earth. But how do birds navigate such vast distances with such remarkable precision?

For decades, scientists believed that birds relied primarily on the Earth’s magnetic field to find their way. This theory was supported by experiments showing that birds with magnets attached to their heads became disoriented during migration. However, recent research has revealed that the truth is far more complex. Birds appear to use multiple navigation systems simultaneously, including the position of the sun and stars, visual landmarks such as coastlines and mountain ranges, and even their sense of smell.

One of the most fascinating discoveries involves a protein called cryptochrome, which is found in the retinas of migratory birds. This protein may allow birds to actually “see” the Earth’s magnetic field as a visual pattern superimposed on their normal vision. If confirmed, this would explain how birds can navigate even on cloudy nights when the stars are not visible.

Despite these advances, many questions remain. Scientists still do not fully understand how young birds, making their first migration alone, know exactly where to go. Some researchers believe that migration routes are partially encoded in genes, while others think that birds learn from older, experienced flock members. What is clear is that bird migration is one of nature’s most impressive phenomena — and one of its most enduring mysteries.

選擇題

  1. According to the passage, the Arctic tern ___. (A) migrates only within the Arctic region (B) has the longest migration of any animal (C) relies solely on the Earth’s magnetic field (D) navigates using only the stars

  2. What is the function of the protein cryptochrome? (A) It helps birds fly faster. (B) It allows birds to see in the dark. (C) It may enable birds to visually detect magnetic fields. (D) It helps birds recognize other members of their species.

  3. What can be inferred about young birds on their first migration? (A) They always travel with their parents. (B) They get lost frequently. (C) They may have some innate knowledge of migration routes. (D) They cannot navigate without the stars.

簡答題

  1. What are THREE navigation systems that birds use, according to the passage?

  1. According to the passage, what two theories explain how young birds know where to migrate?

Practice Set 3:The Psychology of Color

Color is everywhere — in the clothes we wear, the rooms we live in, and the advertisements we see. But few people realize that colors have a profound psychological impact on our emotions, decisions, and behavior. Marketers, interior designers, and even sports teams have long exploited this knowledge to influence how people think and feel.

Research has shown that red increases heart rate and creates a sense of urgency, which is why it is frequently used in clearance sale signs and fast-food restaurant decor. Blue, on the other hand, promotes feelings of calm and trust, making it the most popular color for banks, hospitals, and social media platforms. Green is associated with nature and health, which explains why it is commonly used on organic food packaging and eco-friendly products.

However, the meaning of color is not universal — it varies significantly across cultures. In Western cultures, white symbolizes purity and is traditionally worn by brides at weddings. In many Asian cultures, however, white is associated with mourning and is worn at funerals. Red, considered lucky in China, can signify danger or warning in other contexts. These cultural differences make color psychology a complex field that requires careful consideration of the target audience.

Despite these complexities, businesses continue to invest heavily in color research. Some companies have even trademarked specific shades — Tiffany’s distinctive robin-egg blue, for instance, is legally protected and cannot be used by competitors. Whether we are aware of it or not, the colors around us are shaping our thoughts, feelings, and choices every day.

選擇題

  1. According to the passage, why is the color red used for clearance sale signs? (A) It is the cheapest color to print. (B) It creates a sense of urgency. (C) It is the most popular color among shoppers. (D) It contrasts well with white backgrounds.

  2. What is the main cultural difference regarding the color white mentioned in the passage? (A) It is considered lucky in all cultures. (B) It represents danger in Western cultures. (C) It has different meanings in Western and Asian cultures. (D) It is only used in religious ceremonies.

  3. What does the example of Tiffany’s blue illustrate? (A) Colors cannot be owned by companies. (B) Some companies treat color as a valuable business asset. (C) Blue is the most profitable color. (D) Trademarking colors is illegal.

簡答題

  1. According to the passage, what are the psychological effects of the color blue?
