Five Lessons I Learned From My First Year of College

By Jennifer Lin, College Sophomore

When I started college last year, I thought I had everything figured out. I had good grades in high school, a clear idea of my major, and a plan. Looking back now, I realize how much I still had to learn — and I’m not just talking about academics.

Lesson 1: It’s okay to change your mind. I entered college as a biology major, convinced I would become a doctor. After one semester, I realized I was far more interested in psychology. Changing my major was scary, but it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Lesson 2: Professors are more approachable than you think. In high school, teachers felt like authority figures I should keep at a distance. College professors, however, genuinely want to help. I started attending office hours regularly, and those conversations led to research opportunities I never would have found otherwise.

Lesson 3: Time management is everything. Without parents reminding you to study and a fixed daily schedule, it’s easy to fall behind. I learned to treat my studies like a job — blocking out specific hours each day for coursework and sticking to them.

Lesson 4: Friendships require effort. In high school, friendships seemed to happen naturally because you saw the same people every day. In college, making and keeping friends takes intentional effort. Joining a student club was the best thing I did for my social life.

Lesson 5: Take care of your health. I saw too many classmates burn out from pulling all-nighters and eating nothing but instant noodles. Sleep, exercise, and proper nutrition are not optional — they are the foundation everything else is built on.

19. What is the main message of Jennifer’s blog post?

  • (A) College academics are much easier than high school academics.
  • (B) She regrets choosing psychology over biology as her major.
  • (C) She shares personal lessons she learned during her first year of college.
  • (D) Making friends in college is impossible without joining a club.

20. According to the post, why did Jennifer change her major?

  • (A) Her parents encouraged her to pursue a different career path.
  • (B) She discovered she was more interested in psychology than biology.
  • (C) The biology program at her school was too competitive for her.
  • (D) She failed several required biology courses in her first semester.

21. What advice does Jennifer give about managing time in college?

  • (A) Study only when you feel motivated and energized.
  • (B) Rely on friends to remind you about upcoming assignments.
  • (C) Block out specific hours each day for coursework and stick to them.
  • (D) Take as many classes as possible to stay busy throughout the day.

22. How did Jennifer make friends in college?

  • (A) By attending parties every weekend with her roommates.

  • (C) By joining a student club on campus.
  • (D) By sitting next to different people in every lecture.

Local Community Rallies to Save Historic Theater

TAICHUNG — The Guangming Theater, a beloved 80-year-old movie house in Taichung’s West District, may be saved from demolition thanks to a grassroots campaign led by local residents and cultural preservation groups.

The theater, which opened in 1944 during the Japanese colonial period, has been a cultural landmark for generations of Taichung residents. It was one of the first buildings in the city to screen color films, and its distinctive art deco architecture is considered a rare surviving example of that era. However, the building has been closed since 2018 due to structural concerns, and its current owners had applied for a demolition permit last October.

The campaign to save the Guangming Theater began in December when a local history teacher, Mr. Chen Wei-ting, posted old photographs of the theater on social media. The images triggered an outpouring of memories from longtime residents, and within weeks, a petition to preserve the building had gathered over 15,000 signatures.

“The Guangming Theater isn’t just a building — it’s a container of our community’s memories,” said Ms. Huang Mei-ling, a 72-year-old retired nurse who had her first date at the theater in 1972. “My husband and I watched countless movies there. Tearing it down would be like erasing a part of our lives.”

The preservation group has proposed converting the theater into a community cultural center that would include a small cinema, an exhibition space, and a cafe. They have raised nearly NT$2 million through crowdfunding and are in discussions with the city government about obtaining official heritage status for the building.

The city’s Cultural Affairs Bureau has agreed to review the case. A decision is expected by June.

23. What is the Guangming Theater?

  • (A) A newly built modern cinema in Taichung’s East District.

  • (C) A Japanese-style temple that opened during the colonial period.
  • (D) A museum dedicated to the history of Taiwanese film.

24. How did the campaign to save the theater start?

  • (A) A city government official proposed the idea at a public meeting.
  • (B) A local history teacher posted old photos on social media, triggering public interest.
  • (C) The theater’s owners changed their minds and decided to renovate.
  • (D) A famous actress visited the theater and started a fundraising campaign.

25. What does Ms. Huang Mei-ling mean when she says the theater is “a container of our community’s memories”?

  • (A) The theater building is used to store old film equipment.
  • (B) The theater holds emotional significance and shared history for local residents.
  • (C) The theater’s basement contains a time capsule from the 1970s.
  • (D) The theater was originally designed as a storage facility.

文章 D: Product Review

NoiseCanceller Pro X: Worth the Hype?

I’ve tested dozens of noise-canceling headphones over the years, and the new NoiseCanceller Pro X (priced at NT$8,990) is easily one of the most impressive models I’ve encountered in this price range.

Sound Quality: The audio is rich and balanced, with clear highs and deep bass. Whether I was listening to classical music, podcasts, or bass-heavy electronic tracks, the sound remained crisp and distortion-free even at higher volumes. The Pro X uses a new 40mm custom driver that genuinely outperforms many competitors in the NT$10,000+ category.

Noise Cancellation: This is where the Pro X truly shines. The adaptive noise cancellation automatically adjusts based on your environment. On a noisy Taipei MRT during rush hour, it reduced the surrounding chaos to a barely noticeable hum. The transparency mode, which allows ambient sound in when needed, works seamlessly — I could hold a conversation with a flight attendant without removing the headphones.

Comfort and Battery: At 254 grams, the Pro X is slightly heavier than some competitors, but the memory foam ear cushions distribute weight well. I wore them for a six-hour flight without discomfort. Battery life is rated at 40 hours with ANC on, and my testing confirmed about 37-38 hours — still excellent.

The Verdict: At this price point, the NoiseCanceller Pro X offers exceptional value. The sound quality and noise cancellation rival headphones costing significantly more. The slightly heavier weight is the only minor drawback I can identify. Highly recommended for commuters, travelers, and anyone who needs focused work time in noisy environments.

26. What is the reviewer’s overall opinion of the NoiseCanceller Pro X?

  • (A) The headphones are overpriced and not worth buying.
  • (B) The headphones offer great value with minor drawbacks.
  • (C) The headphones are only suitable for listening to classical music.
  • (D) The headphones are the best product on the market regardless of price.

27. What feature does the reviewer praise the most?

  • (A) The stylish design and color options available.
  • (B) The built-in microphone for phone calls.
  • (C) The adaptive noise cancellation that adjusts to the environment.
  • (D) The waterproof design for use during exercise.

28. According to the review, how long does the battery actually last with noise cancellation turned on?

  • (A) 40 hours exactly, as advertised by the manufacturer.
  • (B) 25 hours, which is significantly less than advertised.
  • (C) About 37 to 38 hours, slightly less than the rated 40 hours.
  • (D) Over 50 hours, exceeding the manufacturer’s claims.

E: Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to the article “Should Taiwan Lower the Voting Age to 18?” published on April 15. While I respect the arguments made by those in favor of this change, I believe there are several important considerations that were not adequately addressed.

First, proponents argue that if 18-year-olds can serve in the military, get married, and pay taxes, they should also be allowed to vote. This is a reasonable point. However, military service, marriage, and tax obligations involve personal decisions or duties, whereas voting determines the direction of the entire nation. The stakes are fundamentally different, and we should not automatically equate these responsibilities.

Second, the article dismissed concerns about political maturity too quickly. While it is true that some 18-year-olds are politically aware and engaged, studies consistently show that the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for long-term decision-making and impulse control — does not fully develop until around age 25. This is a biological fact, not a value judgment about young people’s intelligence or character.

I am not necessarily opposed to lowering the voting age. However, I believe such a significant change should be accompanied by a major expansion of civic education in high schools. If we want young people to vote, we must first ensure they have the knowledge and critical thinking skills to do so responsibly. Currently, civic education in Taiwanese high schools receives far too little attention. Let us address that gap before we expand the electorate.

Sincerely, Wang Chih-ming High School Civics Teacher, Kaohsiung

29. What is the main purpose of Mr. Wang’s letter?

  • (A) To strongly oppose lowering the voting age under any circumstances.
  • (B) To argue that lowering the voting age should be paired with improved civic education.
  • (C) To criticize the original article for containing factual errors.
  • (D) To share his personal experience teaching civics in a Kaohsiung high school.

30. What scientific argument does Mr. Wang use to support his position?

  • (A) Studies show that young people are more likely to vote for extreme political parties.
  • (B) The prefrontal cortex, responsible for long-term decision-making, develops until age 25.
  • (C) Research indicates that lowering the voting age has led to chaos in other countries.
  • (D) Surveys show that most 18-year-olds have no interest in politics.

31. What is Mr. Wang’s profession?

  • (A) A neurologist studying brain development.
  • (B) A journalist who writes about political issues.
  • (C) A high school civics teacher in Kaohsiung.
  • (D) A lawyer specializing in constitutional law.

The Importance of Learning a Second Language(學習第二語言的重要性)

Learning a second language is one of the most valuable investments a person can make. I still remember the first time I had a conversation in English with a foreign tourist — I was nervous, but when he understood me and smiled, I felt a sense of accomplishment that motivated me to keep learning.

There are several concrete benefits to mastering a second language. First, it significantly increases your career opportunities. In today’s globalized economy, many companies prefer candidates who can communicate with international clients. A friend of mine got her dream job at a technology firm precisely because she could speak both Mandarin and English fluently. Second, learning a language opens the door to different cultures. When you understand a language, you can enjoy books, movies, and music in their original form, rather than relying on translations. This deeper cultural understanding also helps you build genuine friendships with people from other countries.

If you are considering learning a new language, my advice is simple: start today and be patient. You do not need to be perfect — you just need to be consistent. Set small daily goals, like learning five new words or practicing for fifteen minutes. Remember that every expert was once a beginner, and the journey of language learning is its own reward.

萬一卡住了,用 “Let me think for a moment” 或 “What I mean is…”

The Saturday Morning Market

Every Saturday morning, the small square near my apartment transforms into a lively farmers’ market. Local farmers arrive before sunrise, their trucks loaded with fresh vegetables, fruits, and homemade products. The air fills with the smell of freshly baked bread and brewing coffee.

My favorite stall belongs to an elderly couple who sell organic honey from their own beehives. The husband, Mr. Chen, always greets me with a warm smile and asks about my week. His wife hands me a tiny spoon to taste their newest batch — golden, sweet, and slightly floral.

The market is more than just a place to buy groceries. It is where neighbors catch up on each other’s lives, where children learn where their food comes from, and where the fast pace of modern life slows down, if only for a few hours. By noon, the square empties, but the sense of community lingers long after the last truck has driven away.

  • transforms /trænsˈfɔːrmz/
  • beehives /ˈbiːhaɪvz/
  • floral /ˈflɔːrəl/
  • lingers /ˈlɪŋɡərz/
  • organic /ɔːrˈɡænɪk/

Part 2:

1. What do you usually do on weekends?

On weekends, I usually try to balance relaxation with productivity. On Saturday mornings, I like to sleep in a little and then go for a jog in the park near my house. In the afternoons, I often meet friends for lunch or coffee. Sundays are usually more quiet — I review my notes from the past week, prepare for the upcoming week’s classes, and sometimes watch a movie with my family.

2. Describe your favorite season and explain why you like it.

My favorite season is autumn. I love it because the weather is perfectly cool and comfortable — not too hot and not too cold. The changing colors of the leaves create beautiful scenery everywhere. Autumn also has a special atmosphere that feels calm and reflective, and I enjoy wearing cozy sweaters and drinking hot tea while reading a book.

3. What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

I enjoy listening to a wide variety of music, but pop and acoustic music are my favorites. I find that soft acoustic songs help me concentrate when I am studying. On the other hand, I listen to upbeat pop music when I exercise because the fast rhythm keeps me motivated and energetic. Music is a big part of my daily life.

4. Do you think students should have part-time jobs? Why or why not?

Yes, I believe part-time jobs can be very beneficial for students. First, working teaches valuable life skills like time management and responsibility that cannot be learned in a classroom. Second, earning your own money gives you a sense of independence. However, I think students should limit their working hours so it does not negatively affect their studies. Balance is key.

5. Tell me about a person who has influenced you greatly.

My high school English teacher has influenced me the most. She was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly patient and encouraging. When I struggled with speaking English, she spent extra time after class helping me practice. Her belief in me gave me the confidence to keep improving. To this day, whenever I face a challenge, I think about her encouragement and push myself forward.

6. What is a skill you would like to learn in the future?

In the future, I would really like to learn how to cook properly. Right now, I can only make very basic dishes like fried rice or instant noodles. I think cooking is an essential life skill, and it would allow me to eat more healthily and save money. It would also be a wonderful way to connect with family and friends by preparing meals for them.

7. How do you usually deal with stress?

When I feel stressed, I usually take a break and go outside for a walk. Being in nature helps clear my mind and puts my problems into perspective. I also find that talking to a close friend or family member about what is bothering me makes a big difference. Sometimes, just writing down my thoughts in a journal helps me organize my feelings and find solutions.

8. Do you prefer living in a big city or a small town?

I prefer living in a big city. Cities offer so many conveniences, such as public transportation, diverse restaurants, and cultural events. There are also more job opportunities and educational resources. However, I do appreciate small towns for their peaceful atmosphere and clean air. If I could, I would live in the city but escape to the countryside on weekends.

9. What do you think makes a good teacher?

A good teacher needs three main qualities. First, they must have deep knowledge of their subject. Second, they should be patient and able to explain things in different ways until every student understands. Most importantly, a good teacher genuinely cares about their students’ progress and well-being. The best teachers inspire you to love learning, not just to pass exams.

10. What are your plans for the next five years?

In the next five years, I plan to complete my university degree and gain some work experience. After graduation, I hope to find a job in an international company where I can use my English skills regularly. I also want to travel to at least three different countries during this time. Ultimately, I hope to build a career I am passionate about while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Part 3:

1. Describe what you see in the picture in as much detail as possible.

The picture shows a lively scene in a community park. On the left side, I can see a group of elderly people practicing tai chi together. Their movements are slow and graceful. In the center, there are parents with young children flying colorful kites in the open grassy area. The children are running and laughing. On the right side, under a pavilion, a group of young people are sitting together, probably discussing or studying something. In the background, the skyline of tall modern buildings is visible, which creates an interesting contrast between city life and recreational space. The overall atmosphere is energetic and harmonious.

2. Why do you think public parks are important for a community?

Public parks are extremely important for communities for several reasons. First, they provide a space for physical activity and exercise, which is essential for everyone’s health. Second, they serve as a social gathering place where people of different ages and backgrounds can interact. Third, parks offer a break from the concrete and noise of the city — they give people a chance to connect with nature. In many ways, parks are like the living room of a community, where neighbors can meet, relax, and build relationships.

3. In your opinion, how can cities encourage more people to use public parks?

I think cities can do several things to encourage more people to use public parks. First, they should ensure that parks are clean, safe, and well-maintained, because nobody wants to spend time in a dirty or dangerous space. Second, cities can organize regular community events like weekend markets, outdoor movie nights, or free exercise classes. Third, adding more facilities such as basketball courts, children’s playgrounds, and benches would make parks more attractive to different groups of people. Good lighting and security are also important so that people feel comfortable using the park in the evening.
